Selection of Hot Stamping Foils.

Selection of hot stamping foils is a very important role while hot stamping process. After due consideration select the foils.

1) Hot Stamping Foil Shades

There are Metallic and Pigment shades are available in the hot stamping foils.
Metallic shades have a shiny finish on the foils. There are different colours are available for stamping. Most popular are shades are Gold and Silver foils. In pigment shades, variety of shades are available. They are basically plane colour shades. Some pigments such as red and dark shades of red can smudge if rubbed.
There can be shade difference on the final output if,
1) High temperature of the machine.
2) Pressure given on the product is high.
3) If there is more dwell time.
4) If artwork has fine lines.
5) Background colour of the substrate also plays an important role. Foils also comes in gloss, semi-gloss, and matt finish.

2) Plasticiser Migration.

In soft plastics, we see this phenomenon. The plasticiser migrates into hot stamping foils when stamped. The portion will become sticky. The foil in that area will become a dull finish. Staking of products on one another may lead to transfer of foil. from one product to another product. Few manufacturers have special foils for these applications, but the customer should take trials of the foil before commercial production.

3) Chemical corrosion

When metallic foils are stamped on ink or any product which contains certain chemicals, there is a possibility that the chemical may attack the foil shade over the period. Foil colour changes, if the leather is treated chemically,

4) Core size of hot foils

Foils are normally wound onto 1″ core. But different manufacturers have different sizes and customer should check before buying the foils.

5) Foil physical characteristics and storing properties.

before buying the product, Full specifications should be read. Specification such as size, length, and storing properties differ as per manufacturers.

6) Hot Stamping foils on coated surface.

Many times the base material is coated with a different coating to protect the substrate or for decoration purpose. It is important to check the coating before selecting the foil for stamping.
UV curing varnish gives high gloss and abrasion-resistant finish. Similarly, polyurethane, silicone and wax coating makes the stamping process very difficult. Some of the such varnishes become hard over the period and don’t accept any types of foils.

Similarly under-cured varnishes, the coating also becomes an issue in having proper adhesion on substrate.

7) Substrate material

It is very important to check substrate material and foil compatibility. Material like PP, HDPE require special foils and may require pretreatment before foil stamping.

8) Over coating on hot stamping foils.

Sometimes the foil stamped require overcoat of the varnish, clear coat to prevent the scratching.
The foil should be selected in such a way the post-treatment should be possible.

7) Application of the product and testing procedures jot stamping foils.

Many times the final product is used in harsh conditions, like extreme temperature, abrasion resistance, oil and grease resistance, chemical resistance etc. Also, the testing procedures laid by the manufacturer of the product should be kept in mind while the selection of hot stamping foils.
